Our Mission: Guided by the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church and the Bishop of Metuchen, Saint Peter's University Hospital is dedicated to serving humanity with humility, focusing on the poor through skilled care and responsible resource management. We address both body and spirit, honoring the dignity and sanctity of every life. We foster a supportive environment for our employees, physicians, and volunteers while prioritizing the education and training of healthcare professionals. Our commitment to ethical principles ensures excellence and patient safety in our community.
Our History: The origins of Saint Peter’s Hospital trace back to 1872 in New Brunswick. With Monsignor John O’Grady's encouragement, Saint Peter’s General Hospital opened in 1907 in a Victorian home, operated by the Grey Nuns of Montreal. Initially staffed by six Grey Nuns, eight local physicians, and six other staff members, the hospital quickly expanded due to high demand. By 1910, a new wing was added, followed by a maternity wing in 1915. Today, Saint Peter’s University Hospital occupies nine acres on Easton Avenue, land donated by the Diocese of Trenton in 1923. The hospital moved there in 1929 after a successful fundraising campaign. Over the decades, numerous expansions occurred, notably under Sister Marie de Pazzi's leadership in the 1970s. Ownership transitioned to the Diocese of Metuchen in 1982.
