Established in 1824 in Charleston, MUSC stands as South Carolina's sole comprehensive academic health system, committed to preserving and enhancing human life through education, research, and patient care. Annually, MUSC educates over 3,200 students across six colleges—Dental Medicine, Graduate Studies, Health Professions, Medicine, Nursing, and Pharmacy—while training more than 900 residents and fellows within its health system.
In fiscal year 2023, MUSC secured over $300 million in research funding, leading the state in overall research support as well as federal and National Institutes of Health funding. As the healthcare arm of the Medical University of South Carolina, MUSC Health is devoted to providing top-tier and safest patient care. Patient care is delivered across 16 hospitals, including those with ownership or governance interests, encompassing approximately 2,700 beds. For the ninth consecutive year in 2023, U.S. News & World Report recognized MUSC Health University Medical Center in Charleston as the Number 1 hospital in South Carolina. The MUSC enterprise operates with an annual budget of $5.9 billion and comprises nearly 26,000 members.
