Charles Pratt, born in 1830 and passing in 1891, was a visionary capitalist, businessman, and philanthropist. As a trailblazer in the American petroleum industry, he established the Astral Oil Works kerosene refinery in Brooklyn, New York. In 1867, he founded Charles Pratt and Company, which later integrated with John D. Rockefeller's Standard Oil in 1874.
Beyond his business acumen, Mr. Pratt was a fervent advocate for education. He founded the Pratt Institute, a private college in New York City that has grown into one of the foremost art schools in the United States. The institute offers diverse programs in art, architecture, fashion design, illustration, interior design, digital arts, creative writing, library and information science, among other fields.
