Adverse diagnoses can dramatically alter patients' lives, leaving them vulnerable to a complex and often unsympathetic healthcare system. This experience is not unfamiliar to physicians who find themselves in the role of patients. In 2003, Dr. Jen-Ling James Chen, founder of Chen Medical, faced such a challenge when diagnosed with cancer and given just two months to live. He and his family encountered the frustrations of a healthcare system driven by profits rather than patient care. As Dr. Chen battled for his life, they also struggled for access to coordinated care.

Following his recovery, Dr. Chen was inspired to transform the healthcare delivery system. He established ChenMed with a commitment to providing accountable, compassionate, and coordinated physician-led, family-oriented primary care. Central to his vision is an enduring mission that traces back to the 1970s when he opened his first primary care practice in Miami Gardens, Florida: delivering affordable, human-centered care to medically underserved communities.
