Summary

GENERAL SUMMARY:

Assists in in the care of patients receiving noninvasive cardiovascular procedures in accordance with hospital and department established procedures. Responsible for identifying patient needs and priorities for care through assessment, planning and delegating care based on patient needs, executing therapeutic physician or nurse initiated interventions, and evaluating the patients response to care and progress towards outcomes.

Supervises Licensed Practical Nurses and/or other support staff in the delivery of patient care as described in Nebraska Statues 38.

PRINCIPAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

1. Commits to the mission, vision, beliefs and consistently demonstrates our core values.

2. Initiates assessment based on the patients presenting problems or needs including collecting key information from patient, family, laboratory and other medical reports: determines priorities for care with special consideration given to patient teaching; documents assessment, clinical judgments and related information according to Bryan Medical Center procedures.

3. Works closely with other care providers to complete the initial and ongoing assessments of patients and to provide clinical assistance as needed; reprioritizes care based on new information.

4. Performs therapeutic nursing interventions as ordered by the physician and consistent with standards of care and practice, nursing division policies and procedures, professional competencies, and with consideration given to risk management and infection control practices.

5. Assists with performance of cardiovascular procedures under instruction of a physician.

6. Administers medication according to procedure and/or direct orders of physician.

7. Schedules, coordinates and may perform perform outpatient/inpatient testing procedures.

8. Delegates work to other staff members as needed.

9. Performs therapeutic nursing interventions consistent with but not limited to: cardiac stress testing including bruce stress testing, flight physicals, stress echo cardiograms and cardiopulmonary stress testing; nuclear and cardiac PET/CT stress testing; Echocardiography procedures requiring contrast; and any other procedures as needed.

10. Documents care based on standards of care and practice and/or clinical priorities including: assessment and ongoing assessment findings; updated clinical priorities; therapeutic interventions with attention to patient education; and patients response to interventions and progress toward outcomes.

11. Performs patient education where applicable; determines the impact of interventions on the patients condition and recognizes the patients progress towards meeting desired outcomes.

12. Serves as a role model and mentor to students in the health professions.

13. Maintains a safe working environment.

14. Initiates communication with peers and other members of the health care team about clinical priorities of care; reports on patient conditions as appropriate.

15. Provides information to patients and families which reduces anxiety and conveys an attitude of acceptance, sensitivity and caring.

16. Advances work knowledge by participating in continuing education inservices, reading periodicals/literature and seeking ongoing development opportunities.

17. Maintains professional relationships and conveys relevant information to other members of the health care team.

18. Initiates problem-solving and conflict resolution skills to foster effective work relationship with peers.

19. Provides direct care to patients as assigned based on patient acuity, needs and qualifications and competencies of self and of other staff members.

20. Performs other related projects and duties as assigned.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

1. Maintains clinical competency as required for position including but not limited to age-specific competencies relative to patients growth and development needs.

2. Knowledge of federal and state regulations related to nursing applications and relative practice area.

3. Knowledge of computer hardware equipment and software applications relevant to work functions.

4. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

5. Ability to supervise, provide instruction and evaluate the work of subordinate patient care staff.

6. Ability to maintain confidentiality relative to sensitive information.

7. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with health care team members and diverse patient populations.

8. Ability to work in a fast-paced environment relevant to changing patient needs, including working with patients with acute, chronic and complex disease process, and those who are dying.

9. Ability to maintain regular and punctual attendance.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Graduation from a School of Nursing with current Registered Nurse licensure from the State of Nebraska or approved compact state of residence as defined by the Nebraska Nurse Practice Act.

OTHER CREDENTIALS / CERTIFICATIONS:

Basic Life Support (CPR) certification required. Bryan Health recognizes American Heart Association (for healthcare professionals), American Red Cross (for healthcare professionals) and the Military Training Network. Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification required or required within six (6) months of hire.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

(Physical Requirements are based on federal criteria and assigned by Human Resources upon review of the Principal Job Functions.)

(DOT) Characterized as medium work requiring exertion of 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or a greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Occasionally required to team lift and move patients who can be up to 420 pounds. Will be required to lift some heavy packages up to 60 pounds. May stand for long periods up to 7.5 hours during regular shift. Potentially severe hazards, as may be exposed to communicable diseases, radiation and chemicals. May be subjected to disagreeable odors on a regular basis. Will be subjected to potentially stressful conditions involving critically ill patients and the interpersonal relationships of coworkers. OSHA Blood borne Pathogen Exposure Category I will be required to practice Universal Precautions. May be subjected to the behaviors of combative or confused patients. Regular exposure to latex.
